Still moving forward.

Happy New Year's Eve everyone. Here's to living life more fully in the years to come.

Lyrics by: Radiohead "Fitter Happier"

Fitter, happier, more productive,
comfortable,
not drinking too much,
regular exercise at the gym
(3 days a week),
getting on better with your associate employee contemporaries ,
at ease,
eating well
(no more microwave dinners and saturated fats),
a patient better driver,
a safer car
(baby smiling in back seat),
sleeping well
(no bad dreams),
no paranoia,
careful to all animals
(never washing spiders down the plughole),
keep in contact with old friends
(enjoy a drink now and then),
will frequently check credit at
(moral) bank (hole in the wall),
favors for favors,
fond but not in love,
charity standing orders,
on Sundays ring road supermarket
(no killing moths or putting boiling water on the ants),
car wash
(also on Sundays),
no longer afraid of the dark or midday shadows
nothing so ridiculously teenage and desperate,
nothing so childish - at a better pace,
slower and more calculated,
no chance of escape,
now self-employed,
concerned (but powerless),
an empowered and informed member of society
(pragmatism not idealism),
will not cry in public,
less chance of illness,
tires that grip in the wet
(shot of baby strapped in back seat),
a good memory,
still cries at a good film,
still kisses with saliva,
no longer empty and frantic
like a cat
tied to a stick,
that's driven into
frozen winter shit
(the ability to laugh at weakness),
calm,
fitter,
healthier and more productive
a pig
in a cage
on antibiotics.

Turkey Day at the Millsap Farm

Please wait for the show to load, then click play on the bottom left
**warning, contains graphic content**

My mother is buying a turkey from Son Harvest Farm in Nixa, MO. By benefit of that fact, I was able to go to Milsap Farms thanks to the kindness of Curtis Milsap.

This, in turn, led to me completing one of my goals I had while I was visiting the parents for the holidays. I have never explored my home area with my camera, and so I wanted to find something interesting to do a personal project on. As it turned out, Curtis and friends were slaughtering turkeys today. Perfect, I thought. Not only could I take some interesting photos, I could show my mother where her food is coming from.

Curtis and everyone working with him were great and extremely accomodating, and I have to thank them for helping to make this possible. He and his wife have been running the turkey operation for 2.5 years, and operate under sustainable farming practices and really do respect the land and animals they work with. It was refreshing to see a young farmer be passionate about what they do simply because they feel it's right. Especially after seeing Food, Inc. I wondered how local people could combat the monstrosity that is the corporate farming machine. Curtis and his friends and family are a prime example and it was an honor to work with them.

As I said in the beginning, be warned. This slideshow is not for the squeamish. Also, bear in mind that it's a personal project. I was not interested in getting interview audio, the obligatory "nat sound," or any such related things. I made this for me, because I really wanted to take some photographs. So, if you can bear all of that, and the 3+ minutes of music from The Silence of the Lambs (courtesy of miss Jessie King's suggestion) then I thank you for watching.

.Jeans

Jeans

Two hundred sewers earn $1.84 each a day, which amounts to $368 in direct labor costs. The 3,500 pairs of Arizona jeans they produce each day would sell for $52,265 at J. C. Penney stores in the U.S. This means that the direct labor cost for sewing these jeans comes to only 7/10ths of one percent of the sales price. In other words, the women in Nicaragua receive just 11 cents; for every $14.99 pair of Arizona jeans they sew.

Since J.C. Penney leaves just 11 cents behind in Nicaragua in direct labor costs, one wonders what happens to the other $14.88- -99.3 percent of the sales price? (14.99-.11=$14.88)

By comparison, if J.C, Penney made these jeans in the U.S., the labor cost would be approximately 10 percent of the sales price, or $1.50.

Could J.C. Penney afford to do better? After all, 23 cents an hour, or $11.04 a week is a sub-subsistence wage in Nicaragua, on which no one can survive.

Holiday Road Hazard

Food Drive

Taking my usual route to work the other morning I was pondering the happiness caused by classes being over. All of a sudden I hear all this screaming and honking coming from the right. Instead of losing control of my car, I snapped a frame out the window (yes, while keeping my eyes on the road mother.) **Note for Alex that the vignetting is caused by the lens, not post**

Essence of Chihuahua

Essence of chihuahua

I got chased down by a truck

Bub (uhhhhh)

Walking back to my car from work, I always try to take some pictures. Usually I never end up doing anything with them, I just take them for the sake of practice. While crossing the street, I see it. A glorious cherry-red Chevy with the words "BUBBA" strewn across its front bumper. To my surprise, there wasn't a dead animal hanging in or around it anywhere. I had just enough time while crossing to snap a few shots from the hip. Nope, no turkey on those, blurry and bad composition. I let out a small sigh for my lost opportunity and move on toward my car.
Once I arrive at the parking garage, there it is.
No idea how it found me, no idea what the driver will want from me. I press onward. As I try to slyly pass the truck, an elfish chortle comes from inside the truck.
"Did I do something wrong?" ...the well-seasoned woman driving "bubba" says to me.
I laugh.
"Umm, no, I just really liked the front of your truck so I took a picture of it."
She retorts, "We sell wood, people call us Bubba, I didn't know what was going on!"
"I'm a photographer, sorry, sometimes I freak people out like that. Now that I have you here can I take a better picture of your truck?"
"Yep, I suppose so, as long as I'm not in trouble."
I thank her, and get my picture.

Circumstances

Due to the tragic event that occurred this morning in the parking garage that I posted a picture from today, I have taken that photo down. I was unaware of the event until after I had posted the photograph. I may repost it in a few weeks. At any rate, no disrespect was meant to the victim or their family. The story can be found HERE.
