One more from the census

spanish_census_dancers_05

At the request of my friend Pinar, here's another image from the census rally. I wasn't sure about it initially, which is why I didn't post it. What do you think? Love it? Hate it? Indifferent?

The U.S. Census Bureau held a rally in Jefferson City Monday to encourage people to participate in the Census. While they had dancers, free food and special blue census piggy banks, only about 20 people showed up. Despite it being a huge flop for the government folk, I got to see some cool performances.

Jazzin' with Rufus Reid

Yesterday I had the pleasure of hanging out with the amazing Jazz bassist Rufus Reid. If you've never heard of him, check out some of his music, you won't be disappointed. He gave a master class to some students at Hickman High School. He's a super-nice person and an incredibly talented musician. It was great fun hanging out and making pictures while listening to him teach.

Aikido

My brother-in-law had his first testing in his Aikido class this weekend. He did a fantastic job, especially since he is just beginning. Here are a few frames from the event. It's a surprisingly difficult thing to photograph, having never done it before. Hopefully I'll be able to go back for future events and work on it a little. At any rate, it was so much fun to watch him do his thing.

Smokey and Hog

Smokey

smokey and hog

Smokey and Hog are the dogs that live with my long-term subject Potter. When I first met them, they both tried to rip me out of my car and share pieces of my throat. After Potter said to them that I was OK, we became good friends. Hog got hit by a truck a few years back, so she can't walk around too well. Smokey chases mice all day around Potter's place. They'll definitely be a part of the story somehow.

"If you make it worthless, nobody else will want it"

potter_012310_44

This is Potter. He's been living in an abandoned chemical storage facility for 10 years, and calls it home. I've been visiting him for a few months now, and am working on a long-term story about his life alone in the Missouri woods. He has no running water or electricity. He collects rainwater around buildings that are slowly rotting from leftover chemicals.I'll try to periodically post some images from my takes. But for now, I'll just put up this one to officially introduce him
